Shatron: A Modular Trumpet Mute System

Combining Musical Performance and Ecological Responsibility

Shatron is a geometric hipped roof with a sharply pitched incline, traditionally used to cover churches in the North of Russia. Its pyramidal geometry enhances sound quality by reflecting and improving its uniformity. Altempo Design Research Group has translated this architectural element into a modular trumpet mute system, creating a harmonious blend of art, architecture, and music.

What sets Shatron apart is its use of fine wood scraps from the furniture production industry. Many wood industries discard small pieces of wood that are too small to be recycled or reused. However, these scraps, often made from dense and hard woods used in musical instrument construction, present an excellent opportunity for innovation in the music field. By repurposing these scraps, Shatron combines musical excellence with ecological responsibility.

The support structure of the Shatron mute system is produced using three-dimensional printing technology with polymeric filaments reinforced with carbon fiber. This combination ensures great rigidity and durability. The walls of the structure are made of wooden sheets of different densities, allowing for customization of the sound according to the needs of the trumpeter.

With dimensions of 150mm in height, 84mm in width, and weighing only 80 grams, the Shatron mute system offers a unique musical experience. While its frequencies are similar to those of straight metal mufflers, the sound produced is less strident in the high register. The warm tone provided by the choice of wood sets it apart from traditional metal mute systems. The ability to configure the mute using different types of wood makes it flexible and appealing to even the most demanding musicians.

Operating the Shatron mute system is simple. Designed for straight trumpets, the mute system offers a prompt response and easy passages without smudging. The polymeric structure reinforced with carbon fiber ensures resistance and durability, making it suitable for professional use.

The entire Shatron project was realized in the north of Portugal. The support structure was 3D printed at the creative space, Double Concept Bar in Viana do Castelo. The wooden panels were produced from remnants of furniture production by Paredes' Moveis Aja companies. Acoustic configuration was performed by Rui Pedro Silva of Atelier Rps Aveiro. The prototypes were tested for two years by trumpeters, including teachers and students from the Arteam Professional Music School of Alto Minho. Renderixphotos and Ponto de Vista Audiovisuais were also involved in the project, providing visual content.

Shatron is not only a design innovation but also a result of research on the reuse of productive waste from the furniture industry. It demonstrates the power of territorial networks in creating information tracks and facilitating the flow of materials, technologies, and design-driven innovation.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Musical Instruments Design category in 2020. The award acknowledges well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.
